Remodel Your Home in Christ: Interior Design

Please share with your friends!

There has never been a more pressing time than now for us to create a Christ-centered home!  Your home has so much potential to do good and bless the lives of all who live within its walls!  Parents and children alike!  Never underestimate the power of family!  Creating a Christ-centered home is your greatest defense against the evils of this world.

Families are ordained of God.  You know family is important.  You know the only way to create a strong, unified family is to help them focus on Christ.  But how?  Where do you begin?

Over the next several posts, if you’ll stick with me, I want to walk you through what I like to think of as “Remodeling Your Home”.  Let’s take the framework you already have in place, and tweak it so that it’s functioning at 110%!

Warning: This is going to take effort on your part!  You’ll need to do the work prayerfully to make your home the beautiful masterpiece God intends for it to be!

Just so you have an idea where we’re headed…Here’s the line up!

Definition of Interior Design

An interior designer does much more than decorate a home! An interior designer creates the perfect balance between art and functionality for a living space.

In order for you to be the interior designer of your Christ-centered home, you’ll need to consider the functionality of your living space. Interior design is much more than decorating well.

It’s time to consider what you want to see happening in your home. Consider the purpose of your home. How can you make each room in your home functional, beautiful, AND a house of God?

What Makes a Good Interior Designer?

As Mom, you wear many hats! So you might as well add “interior designer” to the list!

I’m going to let you in on the secret sauce all good interior designers bring to the table…

  1. Understanding of the living space and its function.
  2. Seeking out and allowing yourself to be inspired!

Understand the Space and its Function

When designing a living space, a room, or an area your focus should be on the function of the room.

For example, if you know you want to gather your family daily to study from the Bible, you’ll need to consider where in your home this activity will take place. And in this space, is there somewhere to store your scriptures? Plan your space to make gathering and reading together both efficient and practical.

Ask Yourself This…
  • What is the purpose of my home?
  • What does my family need to do in my home to grow closer to Christ and strengthen family relationships?
  • What purpose do my art, decor, and furnishings serve?
  • Do the style and decorations inside my home remind me of the Savior?
  • If Christ is truly my foundation, then what am I doing in my home to keep the Savior in mind and in my heart?

Seek Inspiration and Allow Yourself to be Inspired

Where do you find inspiration? How do you seek inspiration?

Allow yourself to be inspired by God!

Ask for His help and trust that He will guide you.

Open your heart and mind to His divine guidance.

Let Him lead you and inspire you to do good and make the greatest impact in your home.

Design Your Home to Reflect Christ

Create a Family Vision Wall

One of the most difficult challenges you and I face is to remember! How I wish this wasn’t hard, but with life constantly in the fast lane as a mom, it’s no wonder!

Solve the Forgetfulness Dilemma!

Create a family vision board and put it where the whole family will see it often!

You can create a beautiful family vision “board”, wall, shelf…you name it! It doesn’t have to be something you don’t want in the main living areas of your home. In fact, it should be something you want to display!

Here are some ideas of what you can include!
  • Family photos
  • Wedding Photos
  • Pictures of the Savior
  • Family Motto, Mission Statement, or Scripture
  • Family Rules

I love the scripture Joshua 24:15 “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” I just feel like this statement so perfectly embodies everything I want for my home and family. There are dozens of cute ways to display this verse in your home! Here’s a cute one from Etsy and a bunch more on Amazon!

I hope that helps to get you started! The idea is to include something that will remind you of your Savior, your vision, and your goals so that you can better focus on what matters most!

Create Family Traditions to Strengthen Your Family

Good interior designers pay attention to the details! They look for patterns.

So here’s a question for you…what patterns have you already established in your home? What patterns would you like to create? Let’s use another word for our patterns, though…let’s call them Traditions.

I know most people think of holidays when you hear “traditions”. But traditions certainly aren’t just about the holidays!
  • Traditions can be daily routines like family prayer and family dinner.
  • Traditions can be weekly…like having a family game night or attending church on Sundays.
  • Traditions can be monthly, like a one-on-one outing with each of your kiddos!
  • And they can certainly be yearly! Think birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, etc.

These are the very patterns that make your house a home!

I want you to consider what traditions you currently hold. Now ask yourself…

  • “Do these traditions honor my family vision?”
  • “Do these traditions bring us closer to the Savior?”

If there is anything you are consistently doing that doesn’t align with your goals, scrap it! Stop it right now and replace it with a tradition (pattern or habit) that will bring you closer to your goals!

Life is made up of moments! Day to day, week by week, month by month, and year by year! Every moment matters and has the potential to create beautiful family memories, unity, and a stronger relationship with our Savior. Don’t let them go to waste!

I challenge you to create traditions your family needs to start yesterday to make every moment count!

Step 1: Start by asking yourself the following questions…

  • What activities should we do that will help our family reach our goals?
  • How can we learn more about the Savior and strengthen your relationship with Him?
  • What can we do to strengthen individual relationships within our family?

Step 2: Brainstorm Ideas and Activities

Begin with daily, then weekly, then monthly, and annual traditions. Don’t analyze anything yet! Just write the ideas down as they come.

I strongly believe that when you are being intentional and asking God to help your family, He will help! But you have to put in the effort. So brainstorm prayerfully and let Him inspire you. Only He knows exactly what you and your family need. And remember, no idea is silly or dumb.

Step 3: Pick your top 3 activities and make a plan to incorporate these activities as new “patterns” in your home!

You can always add more traditions with time, but the key to success is not to overwhelm yourself to the point that you just give up! Speaking from personal experience here!

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t created your family vision yet, I want you to take a step back and read Part 1 of this series. It’s all about creating your family blueprint and establishing what your family vision looks like!

Creating your family vision and establishing family traditions will keep your foundation and your home centered on the Savior. What makes a home beautiful isn’t about what is inside…it is about WHO is inside! I’m so excited for the relationships you are building with both your family and the Savior!

Once you’ve completed the challenge for this section, please come back and comment at the bottom which traditions you’ve decided to start! Maybe you were inspired to do something that will bless also bless another family!
